Get Books is the second tab on the tab bar directly following the Bookshelf tab. It allows you to access material on BARD and browse recently added audio and braille books and magazines and most-popular audio and braille books. Items in these categories, as well as those on your wish list and previous downloads list, can be downloaded directly to your device.

Side By Side Third Edition Book 1 Audio Download

This setting allows you to display books in a preferred format only: both audio and braille, audio only, or braille only. By default, titles in both formats will display in lists of available materials. Choose audio only or braille only to display titles in the preferred format only. All displays of book lists in the Get Books section, other than the wish list, previous downloads, and web view (BARD website), will adhere to this setting. The Bookshelf screen will hide submenus for braille and audio materials according to the setting unless there are items in those categories already on the device.

By default, BARD Mobile will play content within books marked as skippable. Skippable material may include items such as sidebars, page numbers, and footnotes. To change this setting for the book you are reading, select the Skippable button, then activate the Skip button if you would like to skip material marked as skippable.

Books that are stored on your computer can be side loaded onto BARD Mobile by using services that allow you to store your files on the cloud and access them from your phone, computer, or the company website. To side load audio items they must be zipped, with each book or magazine zipped as a separate file. You do not have to zip braille books before importing them, but if you do not, BARD Mobile will treat each braille file as a separate book.

Please note that each protected audio item must receive a unique key from BARD in order to play on your mobile device. Audio items that have been side loaded will not play until your mobile device is able to contact BARD.

iTunes and Dropbox are two third-party file sharing applications that can be used to side load titles on BARD Mobile. The following instructions for using these applications have been included here as a courtesy to BARD Mobile users. Their inclusion does not imply that these applications are supported or endorsed by the National Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled.

Smartphones have all the standard features that you can find in today's cell phones, such as Caller ID, a Contacts application, text messaging, and a call log. However, they also have many more features and functions that you may find on a PC, such as Bluetooth wireless connectivity, Internet Explorer, a calendar, Outlook E-mail, an audio player, and a camera with still and video capture and playback. What is important to those of us who are blind or have low vision is the Smartphone's operating system, which has the ability to load third-party software products, such as Smart Hal and Mobile Speak Smartphone, as well as many other third-party software products, including map and GPS navigation software, text editors similar to NotePad, and the Audible Player for reading books purchased and downloaded from Audible.com.

Blogs and Newsgroups There are blogs, mostly creation / evolution debating, and some Usenetnewsgroups. The latter are accessible through Google Groups. Blogs havetaken over from newsgroups, which are basically nearly dead now. I do nothave enough understanding of Facebook to know what is available there. Some brief descriptions of some of the major ones covering evolution: Dechronization (Blog) Named aftera science fiction novel written by the famous evolutionary biologist GeorgeGaylord Simpson, this is a technically oriented blog run by about 6young phylogeny-oriented evolutionary biologists. Aside from occasionalnatural history it is mostly devoted to phylogenetic methods. Panda's Thumb (Blog) Blog defending evolutionary biology against creationists and advocates ofIntelligent Design, run by Reed Cartwright, a phylogeny postdoc. Uncommon Descent (Blog) Blog centered around William Dembski and Denyse O'Leary, critics ofevolutionary biology and advocates of Intelligent Design. sci.bio.evolution(Usenet newsgroup) Moderated by Josh Hayes, formerly of our own Center for QuantitativeSciences, who should get some sort of award for putting up with a lot of nonsense.I think it was intended as a forum for discussion among researchers, but hastended to be filled with postings by amateurs, including some high-volumecranks. In among them are some people with serious knowledge. Not intended forevolution/creation debates: Josh screens these out. Lately traffic hasdeclined, as newsgroups are disappearing. talk.origins(Usenet newsgroup) The arena for endless debate between creationists and others, withfrequent digressions into theology (or maybe it's for discussion of theologywith occasional digressions into biology). Extremely high noise to signalratio. When a decisive point is made, the opponent changes the subject or justrefuses to respond. The pro-evolution posters generally do a good job.Web Pages 2ff7e9595c
